Apple manufacturer faced with new labor violation claims

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 29 Juli 2013 | 23.07

A new report from the China Labor Watch (CLW) has alleged Apple's Taiwanese supplier Pegatron Corp. uses underage workers, pays "insufficient" wages, and forces overtime.

Overall, Pegatron factories are "even worse than those at Foxconn," executive director Li Qiang said in a statement, as reported by Bloomberg.

Foxconn is one of the world's largest contract manufacturers of electronic components and products for companies like Apple, Dell, HP, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, among others.

The CLW found 86 labor rights violations during investigations at three Pegatron factories from March through July. Apple spokesperson Carolyn Wu told the site that though the company had been in close communication with the CLW, some of the claims are "new to us."

"We will investigate these new claims thoroughly, ensure that corrective actions are taken where needed, and report any violations of our code of conduct," Wu said. "We will not tolerate deviations from our code."

Pegatron itself will also investigate the claims, president and CEO Jason Cheng said in a statement.

Apple said it conducted 15 audits of Pegatron factories since 2007, with the most recent survey of employees finding those making Apple products worked an average of 46 hours per week, Wu said. The CLW does not agree, saying average weekly working hours were between 66 and 69 hours, a violation of China's 49-hour limit.

"Apple has not lived up to its own standards," the CLW said in a statement. "This will lead to Apple's suppliers abusing labor in order to strengthen their position for receiving orders. In this way, Apple is worsening conditions for workers, not improving them."

Original Gears of War had dog companion

Former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski says canine companion was cut early in the development process.

The original Gears of War had a dog companion, former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski told Kotaku in a new interview.

"Gears 1 had a canine helper with you that was cut early in the game. Guess word got out to Activision," Bleszinski said.

Call of Duty: Ghosts features a dog, Riley, that players can control in various ways. Employees at developer Infinity Ward are split on whether or not they want the dog to die, though the studio has already decided Riley's fate.

Also in the interview, Bleszinski said "there's some truth" to the idea that cutting features can help ship games. "Sometimes you need to ship with the bare minimum of cool and then polish the cut ideas for a sequel, strangely enough," he said.

Bleszinski left Epic Games last October after 20 years with the company.

Analyst: The Bureau: XCOM Declassified will come up short

Cowen & Company's Doug Creutz believes new game from 2K Marin will sell fewer than 250,000 copies in US through end of the year.

A long development for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified won't be rewarded with strong sales, according to Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz.

In a note to investors today, Creutz said 2K Marin's game is "unlikely to generate any significant sales." This will be fewer than 250,000 units in the United States through the end of the calendar year, he said.

Creutz's estimation is based on the results of an internal analysis of upcoming titles stemming from the number of preorders for the seven weeks since E3.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified was originally announced in 2010 as a first-person shooter called XCOM. After numerous delays and years of silence, 2K Games announced in April that the game would release August 20 under its new name for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC as a full-price, third-person shooter.

Miyamoto explains why 3DS Pikmin prototype was canned

On the eve of Pikmin 3's release on Wii U, legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has explained why Nintendo canned a handheld prototype of the strategy series for DS and 3DS.

"The truth is we were doing prototype tests of Pikmin for the DS and 3DS but it turned into unit management with only the touch pen and no matter what it just didn't seem like Pikmin," explained Miyamoto to 4Gamer (translated via ONM).

The problem, according to Miyamoto, is in the game's controls. "We concluded that Pikmin is a game that revolves around action based on its controls and the strategy sits on top that. Although there are elements that are built on the strategy, there are other overall things that have to be well considered. This complete experience is an important element of Pikmin."

While the Pikmin prototype didn't meet Miyamoto's expectations on 3DS, the designer says the Wii U's GamePad makes the latest entry in the series accessible. "[Pikmin 3] may seem difficult on first glance but once you try the controls, it's easy. Even if you find using the pointer difficult, there is a control method using the GamePad similar to the previous GameCube titles that we'd like people to utilize. To that end, we hope people are able to look at this as a carefree, easy action game."

Pikmin 3 will be released in North America on August 4. The game is already available in Europe, Australia, and Japan.

Pikmin 3 landed at No. 2 in the UK charts after its first weekend on sale.

Little Big Planet dev's next game delayed

Little Big Planet developer Media Molecule today announced that its next game, PlayStation Vita title Tearaway, has been delayed to November 22.

The game was originally scheduled to launch in mid-October, but studio director Siobhan Reddy explained on the PlayStation Blog that Media Molecule needed more time to finish it.

"We are now in the final stages of development, and have come to the realization that we need a little more time than we anticipated to finish the game; to tie all of the mechanics, story and amazing visuals together into the adventure that we want you to play," Reddy said.

Reddy said Media Molecule is "really, really sorry" for the delay.

"Thanks for being patient, please don't be too cross with us, lots of love, Mm xxxx."

Tearaway, a papercraft platformer, was announced last year and will make use of numerous PS Vita features, including the system's cameras and rear touch pad.

Media Molecule revealed an all-new experimental PlayStation 4 game at the console's announcement event in New York City in February.

Microsoft: Xbox One controller $60, headset $25

Official Microsoft Store lists prices for next-generation console accessories; play-and-charge kit bundle will be $75.

The official Microsoft Store has been updated with pricing information for a range of Xbox One accessories, revealing extra controllers will go for $60 and additional headsets for $25.

An Xbox One wireless controller with play-and-charge kit will sell for $75, while the play-and-charge kit alone will go for $25.

It is not clear if the Xbox One accessory pricing information is final. GameSpot has reached out to Microsoft for comment.

All Xbox One units include one wireless controller, though the system will not come bundled with a pack-in headset. Players can still use voice commands out of the box, though, thanks to Kinect.

Competitor Sony will offer extra DualShock 4 controllers and PlayStation Eye units for the PlayStation 4 at $60 each. The Xbox One ($500) and PS4 ($400) launch later this year.

Clementine will return in The Walking Dead season 2

Telltale has confirmed that one its main characters in The Walking Dead game, Clementine, will be returning for the second season.

Speaking at a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con (reported by IGN), Telltale said that Clementine "will definitely be a part of" The Walking Dead's upcoming second season.

Telltale is aiming to release the first chapter of its second season of The Walking Dead later this year.

Elsewhere in the panel, Telltale also said the fate of accompanying character Kenny "will be explored." A teaser image of what appeared to Clementine sitting in the rain next to another child was also shown, adds IGN.

Clementine is a young girl found by protagonist Lee Everett near the start of season one's five episodes, and accompanies Everett throughout the rest of the chapters.

Telltale also said that season two of The Walking Dead would launch on Vita on the same day as other platforms, unlike the delay with season one.

Telltale recently released The Walking Dead: 400 Days, an additional chapter designed to bridge the gap between season one and two. GameSpot awarded the new chapter a score of 9.0 in its review.

Xbox One records last 5 minutes of gameplay

Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox One is capable of recording the last five minutes of gameplay through its new game DVR feature.

"It's called Project Upload. So the idea is you're always recording," Microsoft Studios creative director Ken Lobb told GameSpot at Comic-Con. "So we have a ring buffer game DVR, basically. So the last five minutes of any game you're playing is always being stored locally on your hard drive. "

When Microsoft announced the new game DVR feature in May, the company did not say how long the next-generation system would record. By comparison, the PlayStation 4 boasts a similar functionality. Eurogamer reports that Sony's system could allow players to record the last 15 minutes of gameplay, though final duration may be seven minutes.

Lobb also discussed how the game DVR functionality will work on Xbox One. He said when playing online, gamers can say "Xbox Record," and the system will automatically record the last 30 seconds of gameplay. Players can then edit their video and spruce it up with voice over and even picture-in-picture through Kinect. Videos can then be shared through social networks.

The Xbox One and PS4 launch this holiday. Initial shortages are expected.

Konami teases new Castlevania game

Castlevania producer Dave Cox has teased a new entry in the Lords of Shadow series and revealed that whatever this game turns out to be, Mercury Steam will not develop it.

Speaking during a Comic-Con roundtable interview, Cox said Konami has learned a great many lessons as it relates to performance capture for the series and suggested these lessons could be applied to an all-new game.

"We have to really plan differently and do things differently. And we've made mistakes on this one, as well, which we're going to hopefully improve for the next one [Emphasis added]," Cox said. "I think it's a learning process and I think game developers are learning every day how to do things better."

Cox also confirmed in the interview that Spanish developer Mercury Steam is moving away from the Lords of Shadow series because it has nothing left to say in the universe.

"I think if you've got something to say, you should just say it, and when you're done, just shut up," Cox said. "And we've got something to say. And once it's out there…I think it's time for somebody else; somebody younger, a younger producer to come in and take up the mantle and do what they think would be right for Castlevania and for us to move on to something else."

"I think Castlevania is a series that has evolved over the 26 years to what it is today and I think it's in good shape right now and I think people will really enjoy the last one," he added. "There's a lot of surprises and I think we're going to deliver something unexpected."

In June, Cox said Mercury Steam has "next-gen in mind for our next project," but would not say more. Though Cox wouldn't go into more detail about this next game, last year he teased that Mercury Steam has a couple of "really cool ideas" in the works, adding that "it's no secret that I'm a big fan of Contra and I'd like to do something in that universe."

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 launches for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this winter.

Australian government will consider reclassifying Saints Row IV

Classification Review Board will meet July 29 to consider application for the review of upcoming action game.

The Australian Classification Review Board will meet July 29 to consider an application to review the classification of Deep Silver's open-world action game Saints Row IV.

The game was refused classification on June 19 for anal probe weapons depicting "implied sexual violence," among other things, meaning the game was effectively banned in the country.

"In the Board's opinion, Saints Row IV, includes interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context," a June 25 statement from the board said.

"In addition, the game includes elements of illicit or prescribed drug use related to incentives or rewards. Such depictions are prohibited by the computer games guidelines."

Saints Row IV launches in the United States and Europe next month on August 20 and August 23, respectively. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Apple developer center hacked

Apple has taken down its developer website following a hacking attempt that potentially exposed names, physical mailing addresses, and email accounts.

In a statement on the site titled "We'll be back soon," Apple explained that this hacking attempt was detected on Thursday.

"Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers' names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed," the statement reads.

"In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then."

Apple explained that in order to prevent a similar security threat in the future, the company is "completely overhauling" its developer systems, updating server software, and rebuilding its entire database.

"We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon," the statement reads.

Developers with program memberships set to expire during the period will have their accounts extended, Apple said. No indication as to when the portal will reopen has been given.

Xbox update process "unacceptable" for F2P games, says World of Tanks dev

The Xbox 360's update and certification processes are "unacceptable" for free-to-play games, World of Tanks developer Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi told Polygon in a new interview.

The executive explained that Wargaming is working with Microsoft to streamline its certification and update processes ahead of World of Tanks' launch on Xbox 360 this summer.

"The good thing is with online games, sometimes if you screw up, you can do frequent updates," Kislyi said. "But one of the biggest challenges with Microsoft was the frequency of updates because the QA process and certification process takes an extremely long time. Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play. We are working with them to do quicker updates."

World of Tanks will be a free-to-play title on Xbox Live, though it won't be entirely free-to-play, as players must have a Gold subscription ($5/month) to play the game. Kislyi said last month that the company must "tolerate" this requirement, which he is "not happy about."

Original Xbox creator reveals rejected console names

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 08 Juli 2013 | 23.07

A recently republished 2003 Edge interview with Seamus Blackley, one of the founding members of the Xbox team at Microsoft, has revealed some of the unsuccessful names for the company's original console.

"First, there were our code names, which were WEP--'Windows Entertainment Project'--designed to make Microsoft executives comfortable, Midway--'Midway between a PC and a console or 'Battle of Midway'--you decide--and DirectX Box, which was shortened to xbox in email very early on," he said.

Blackley describes fellow Xbox executive Kevin Brachus telling the then small team that 'xbox' was legally unsound, and needed to be changed. What followed was a list of "crap," car-inspired names so bad the team didn't even record them for posterity, before moving on to acronym-based names.

"Phase four was a battle between us and the naming guys, when we decided we just wanted to risk it and go with Xbox--since that's what everyone called it anyway--and they wanted, for some unknowable reason, to call it '11-X' or 'Eleven-X'. Finally, we told them no, but still had to decide: X-Box, xBox, XboX, Xbox, X-box…"

Some of the other rejected suggestions for the device included the 'MIND (Microsoft Interactive Network Device)', 'FACE (Full Action Center)', 'MOX (Microsoft Optimal Experience)', 'VERV (Virtual Entertainment & Reality Venture)', 'M-PAC (Microsoft Play and Action Center)', 'R&R (Reality and Revolution)', and 'MARZ (Microsoft Active Reality Zone)'.

Reality Check - Are you a Console Fanboy?

I am not a fanboy. I am loyal to myself. My primary console choices (I have owned more than one console in a few generations) has been chosen for very pragmatic reasons. If I could afford to own every console, I would. Each offers its own unique opportunities for entertainment.

A brief history of my console buying habits.

Atari 7200. What else was there? I was 7. I didn't know about anything else, and I was too poor to own a computer in the 80s. (i know the 7200 is considered 3rd gen but I feel it belongs in second gen)

8 bit (AKA 3rd Gen)= NES. Mario brothers. What else is there to say?

16 bit (AKA 4th Gen) = SNES. Still Mario. But also, I discovered Final Fantasy (I was too young to appreciate FF on the NES). Got a Genesis many years later at a garage sale super cheap.

32/64bit (AKA 5th Gen) PSone. Final Fantasy 7 was all that mattered. Also, this marked the beginning of the end for Nintendo 3rd party support. No doubt Ocarina of Time was a great game but I only ever played it at McDonald's or a friends house.

6th Gen: Stayed with Sony. The PS2 had FFX, obviously. Benefitted from my roomie having an orginal xbox. Fable, Knights of the old Republic and to a lesser extent Halo made it an attractive console. but I did not need my own.

7th gen. My roomie got the 360. I loved Gears. I got married and moved out. What console should I get? my reasoning: 1) FF XIII was NOT exclusive to Playstation. 2) I loved Gears 3) I had made many freinds online for xbox live. So what did I buy? A NINTENDO WII!  To be fair, this was bought as a family console so I could play games with my wife. I did eventually get a 360 and I it was the primary console I played. In fact, it was for my wife as well, which came as a surprise to both of us. For someone who never owned a console before the Wii, she has a higher gamerscore than I do!

Next Gen. I don't know what to do. many of the arguments that got me a 360 still apply. My friends on xbox live, Final Fantasy not being exclusive to sony (even though I was very disappointed by XIII, Final Fantasy still plays a significant role) . one of my Wife's favourite game series, Dead Rising, is now exclusive to xbox for some uknown reason. But i hate Kinect, I hate the price, and even if they retracted it, I still feel insulted by their used game, region locking and other controversial policies. Its like they called me an idiot, and then thought I'd forget about it when they handed me a hastily given, poorly wrapped regifted present. Thanks, but I remember what you said and how it made me feel.

So, not a fanyboy. But very torn. Inevitably, I have to get a XboxOne, which is depressing.

Nintendo putting vitality sensor on hold

Responding to an investor question during the company's 73rd annual general meeting of shareholders, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confirmed that, at least for now, the vitality sensor peripheral unveiled during the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) would not be coming to market.

"The Wii Vitality Sensor was under development as an accessory for Wii. We thought it would be interesting to understand how the human autonomic nerve functions while using the Wii Vitality Sensor, and we did develop trial software and showed the media some of its features," he said.

Iwata cited inconsistent results during internal testing, saying that Nintendo could not commercialise a product that did not work for all users, with around 10 percent of those who tried the device not able to operate it.

"However, after a large-scale test of a prototype inside the company, we found out that for some people, the sensor did not work as expected," Iwata said. "We wondered if we should commercialize a product which works as expected for 90 people out of 100, but not so for the other 10 people. Though I am sorry that we did not give any specific updates after this product's initial announcement, I would say that knowing that a product has a problem, we should not launch it for the sole reason that we have already announced it."

While the project appears to have been shelved indefinitely until the product is more inclusive for all users, Nintendo hasn't ruled out bringing it to market if the technical challenges can be overcome.

"We would like to launch it into the market if technology advancements enable 999 of 1,000 people to use it without any problems, not only 90 out of 100 people. I actually think that it must be 1,000 of 1,000 people, but (since we use the living body signal with individual differences), it is a little bit of a stretch to make it applicable to every single person," he said.

A US patent filing that surfaced in 2010 revealed that Nintendo's proposed vitality sensor would work by shooting infrared light through a person's fingertip; determining how fast the blood was flowing, and in turn indicating player stress levels.

The Fighting Game Community On Reputation & Mainstream Relevance

I agree with much of what these guys are saying. In particular, on Mark Ross' point about fighting games needing to become more accessible and free to play. Tekken Revolution is the only good example so far, but it's still nowhere near where the genre needs to be. The F2P DOA5 coming soon is another small step.

I want to see Tekken, DOA, Street Fighter and MK, reach the same heights as LoL and SCII. But to get there, they need free-to-play models, and they need to lower the bar for entry. Street Fighter needs to simplify their L/M/H control schemes (I personally know a lot of SF players who will hate me for saying that), and Tekken needs to tone down the bounds. If the game has a lower entry level, it becomes more inclusive, while still providing a learning curve with a very high top level.

Free-to-play is an equally, if not more important step. Tekken Revolution's model is decent, but hindered by the lack of a proper training/practice mode, and a short roster. The unlockable characters requiring absurd amounts of GP is also extremely frustrating. I'd be happier if they provided more characters at $2 to $4 each, but so far you cannot buy additional characters for Tekken Revolution with real money.

Namco Bandai could also do a lot more to encourage competition and drive the game forward. Sanctioned tournaments over PSN would be a good idea; extending Revolution to other platforms would be even better.

Expanding the World Tekken Federation to support Revolution would also be nice. And if Sony would stop requiring me to deposit minimum AU$10 when I want to purchase one thing at $2.95, that would also be a vast improvement.

Player behavior is and has never been exclusively a problem for the fighting game genre, nor is it just an esports problem. Most professional sports employ tough regulations on player behavior, and the media plays a big part too. If you are a professional footballer and you get an assault charge, it could end your career or at the very least cost you a lot of fans and money. (depending on which country you are in, I suppose).

Verbally abusing a player, a referee, or a crowd member at an NRL game, for example, is likely to result in a suspension, a fine, and a lot of negative media exposure. Even off-the-field behavior is taken into account. The NRL has strict rules about how their players act wherever they are, because when players are getting themselves in to trouble and creating negative attention, it looks for bad for them, for their team, for their fans, AND the sport. There's a lot that esports organizers can learn from that.

I'd also like to see some proper kind of independent, industry-funded, international organization (think something along the lines of the IOC, or FIFA) that is inclusive of all popular games, to set regulations on player behavior and ethics, as well as safety standards for events, and to represent esports globally. Not to actually manage events or run leagues, but to create standards and ethics for organizers to follow.

The only other complaint I have is the player names. I'd rather see more players use their own. A lot of the top LoL and SCII players are known by nicknames, which are, more often than not, simply embarrassing.

TL:DR, Blah, Tekken Revolution is pretty sweet, blah blah, esports ethics and player behavior needs regulation.

UK Chart: The Last of Us stays top of UK chart for fourth week

Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us is the first game of 2012 to hold the UK chart for four consecutive weeks.

BioShock Infinite and Dead Island: Riptide both managed to secure three weeks at the top of the chart earlier this year, while Square Enix's Tomb Raider reboot managed two.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition holds onto second place, with FIFA 13 enjoying a resurgence in third.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf drops to fourth, followed by Assassin's Creed III in fifth, Tomb Raider in sixth, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II in seventh.

The Sims 3: Island Paradise is eighth, Deadpool ninth, and Far Cry 3 rounds out the top 10.

Namco Bandai's 3DS RPG Project X Zone is the only new entry in the charts, securing 18th position in its debut week.
