Ubisoft unveils Final Fantasy and Limbo inspired Child of Light

Developer Patrick Plourde unveils the first glimpse of Child of Light at GDC Europe 2013.

Ubisoft has shown a first glimpse of Child of Light, a downloadable title currently being developed at Ubisoft Montreal.

Speaking at a panel at GDC Europe, the game's developer Patrick Plourde--who was also the creative director on Far Cry 3--said Child of Light has been heavily inspired by the styles of Ghibli and Yoshitaka Amano, as well as classic Squaresoft PS1 RPG's Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy VIII.

Plourde said Child of Light will be a side-scroller that features RPG elements like stat growth and an epic "opera" story. The game will also feature co-op play.

The game is being designed as a "light" and "feminine" counterpoint to the male-focused games Plourde has previously worked on, and Plourde added that a third of the Child of Light development team is female.

Child of Light is being built using the UbiArt Framework, the same engine powering Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins. Plourde described it as a playable poem.

Platforms were not mentioned, but Plourde said he pitched the game to Ubisoft as a next-gen IP and confirmed the game would not be coming to mobile. Child of Light is due to be released in Winter 2013.

Plourde also added that Ubisoft was developing another unannounced game with the UbiArt Framework alongside Child of Light.

Batman: Arkham Origins ditches GFWL for Steam on PC

Batman: Arkham Origins on PC will be first in the series to use Steamworks as opposed to Games for Windows Live, Warner Bros. has confirmed.

Batman: Arkham Origins on the PC will not require the use of Microsoft's Games for Windows Live, Warner Bros. has confirmed.

The PC version of the game will instead use Valve's Steamworks to manage achievements and multiplayer, Warner Bros. has said to IGN. Both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City previously used the GFWL service on PC.

Warner Bros. did not mention if Batman: Arkham Origins would make use of other Steamworks features, such as cloud saves, Steam Trading Cards, and Big Picture support.

The single-player portion of Batman: Arkham Origins is being developed by Warner Bros. Montreal, with the multiplayer component being handled by UK developer Splash Damage.

Last week Microsoft confirmed that its efforts to retire its Microsoft Points currency would mean that GFWL users will soon be unable to purchase games from the Xbox.com store.

The recently-unveiled Batman: Arkham Origins collector's edition will also be unavailable on PC when the game launches on October 25.

Destination: Gamescom

I've stuck by Pre-Ordering Playstation4 but I'm having doubts about their online servers, I hope it's somewhat reliable even though Xbox Live will in my opinion once again be the better experience but I am not too fussed about that I mainly chose Playstation4 because obviously NaughtyDog are the sauciest developers ever and it has no gimmicks and unwanted features that I don't want/use Skype, Twitch and Kinect etc also Playstation4 is cheaper and supposedly more powerful so why would I buy an Xbox One?....

The only Exclusive on Xbox One that interested me was Deadrising3 because I love Zombie games and it's a good gash but honestly.... Playstation4 is for games.. Xbox One is an entertainment hub but why I don't need it...

I can have Saucy Skype Sex not on Xbox One but guess where Microsoft?

My fucking laptop..... Microsoft are money grabbing mongs if anyone has any sense they'll go with Sony for next gen.

Ubisoft website details Fighters Uncaged sequel for Xbox One

Ubisoft looks to be gearing up to unveil the previously spotted Fighter Within as a follow-up to critically-mauled Kinect brawler Fighters Uncaged.

A now-removed page on Ubisoft's site for the game (spotted by All Games Beta) states that Fighter Within will be coming to Xbox One, and will use the machine's improved Kinect sensor.

Other than promising more technical precision for the fighting, Fighter Within also seems to be introducing local and online multiplayer to the series. "New Kinect's power dramatically improves the multiplayer experience," reads the now-removed text, "allowing you to invite and defy your friends over a good fight right in your living room, or to compete online against the world to become the ultimate fighter."

Fighters Uncaged was given a score of 2.0 in its GameSpot review, and subsequently became the lowest score given to a game by GameSpot in 2010.

"The only thing you'll get out of this game is a sweat," said reviewer Mark Walton at the time, "as you manically punch at the air in frustration. No matter how eager you might be for a Kinect-powered brawl, Fighters Uncaged is one game that's worth leaving locked up."

WildStar will be a subscription-based MMO

Upcoming sci-fi MMO WildStar will require a subscription to play when it launches on PC in Spring 2014, developer Carbine Studios has confirmed.

Carbine will sell 1, 3, 6, and 12 month subscriptions for WildStar, with prices ranging from $14.99/€12.99/£8.99 for a rolling one-month subscription, to $10.99/€9.99/£6.99 a month when purchasing a year's subscription upfront.

Alongside regular subscriptions, WildStar will also feature an in-game item--C.R.E.D.D.--which will add 30 days of subscription time to a users' account when used. C.R.E.D.D. will be sold in WildStar's Community Exchange, an in-game store that will always sell items anonymously to players at the lowest available price at the time.

C.R.E.D.D. will also be sold for real money, with its price set at $19.99/€16.99/£11.99. C.R.E.D.D. can be stockpiled, but cannot be gifted or traded.

The standard edition of WildStar will be sold for $59.99/€44.99/£34.99 and will contain the game, 30 days of subscription time, and 3 week-long guest passes, adds Carbine.

Carbine also confirmed that it was investigating the possibility of incorporating microtransactions into the game, but is yet to introduce such a scheme. "We're interested in microtransactions, but only if we can offer it in a way that fits with the vision of WildStar. We're approaching this topic very carefully and will share details as they come available," said the developer in a statement.

Apple to reveal next iPhone Sept. 10 - Report

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 12 Agustus 2013 | 23.07

Cupertino technology giant expected to unveil latest iteration of popular smartphone during special event next month.

Sources have told The Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD that Apple is expected to announce the next iPhone during a special event on September 10.

Apple announced the iPhone 5--the latest iteration of the popular smartphone--during a September 2012 event. That phone went on to sell 5 million units in its first weekend on the market.

In addition to an iPhone 5 upgrade, Apple is rumored to be at work on a less expensive iPhone, as well as an iWatch.

Apple was a major partner for Battlefield and Mass Effect publisher Electronic Arts in the latest quarter. For the first time in the company's history, Apple was EA's most significant retail partner measured by overall sales during the April-June period.

Wii U pricing not the issue, says Iwata

It's not the Wii U's pricing that is hurting the system's sales potential, but rather a lack of compelling software, according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.

"If the price is actually an issue [with Wii U], then there is some contradiction between the current sales balance between the basic and premium versions of the Wii U," Iwata told CVG.

"The basic version should have sold a lot, but the fact of the matter is that people are buying more of the premium version. So the issue is not there," he added.

The Wii U has sold 3.61 million units since launch late last year and only 160,000 systems during the April-June quarter. Nintendo plans to sell 9 million consoles by March 2014.

The console is currently available at $300 for an 8GB Basic model and $350 for a 32GB Deluxe version. Nintendo is selling every Wii U at a loss.

Iwata explained that the "real issue" that is holding the Wii U back is a lack of software. The "only solution" is, according to Iwata, is to provide gamers with "a number of quality titles."

Nintendo is planning to do just that. The company shipped Pikmin 3 earlier this month, and has a number of marquee first-party titles on the way this year, including The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD (October), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (November), and Super Mario 3D World (December).

PS4 EverQuest Next not a priority

A PlayStation 4 version of Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game EverQuest Next could one day happen, but it's not the developer's main focus.

"We're very serious about this being a PC-orientated launch. Now, you're dumb not to explore other options with a business of this type, but we're very serious about developing for the PC," producer David Georgeson told Eurogamer.

Georgeson said Sony Online Entertainment is very familiar with the PS4, as the company is bringing two of its biggest titles, DC Universe Online and PlanetSide 2, to the console.

"So we have a lot of people becoming extraordinarily knowledgeable with that box," he said. "We're not adverse to the idea, but we're not going down that path yet."

EverQuest Next was announced earlier this month. Unlike other MMOs, it has no levels and features more than 30 unique classe. The game also boasts destructible environments, allowing players to dynamically shape the world around them.

Also part of the EverQuest Next package is a world-building tool called Landmark. It allows players to create structures using Sony's own Player Studios Software. Landmark will be available as a free download this winter, while EverQuest Next does not have a release date.

Xbox Live Gold Family Pack subscribers to get individual accounts

Microsoft will begin changing Xbox Live Gold Family Pack accounts into individual Xbox Live Gold accounts from the end of August, the company has said.

Xbox Live Gold Family Pack accounts will begin transitioning from August 27. Microsoft introduced the Xbox Live Gold Family Pack in November 2010, allowing one primary account holder to share Xbox Live Gold features with up to three family members.

Each individual Gold account will have the remaining subscription time on the former Family Pack account, alongside three extra months.

After transitioning into individual Gold accounts, activity monitoring features will no longer be available. These allowed parents to keep track of what their children were playing, but Microsoft says its parental control settings will still be available.

Microsoft will also be removing the ability for the parent account to allocate Microsoft Points to other accounts. Microsoft Points themselves will also be phased out alongside the next Xbox dashboard update.

The option to purchase Xbox Live Gold Family Pack subscriptions was removed earlier in the year, meaning the imminent conversion will only apply to existing accounts.

The company also recently reintroduced the ability to share games with family and friends to the Xbox One, which launches later in the year.

For more information on the switch, check out Microsoft's official FAQ on the matter.

Sales of special mech in memory of five-year-old fan who died from brain cancer reaches new milestone.

MechWarrior Online developer Piranha Games has now raised over $100,000 for cancer research from sales of a special mech released in memory of a five-year-old fan who died from inoperable brain cancer in May.

The "Sarah's Jenner" mech is based on the model enjoyed by five-year-old Sarah Marie Alida Parries. One hundred percent of proceeds from sales of the $10 mech will go to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Those interested in purchasing the mech can do so at a special landing page for the offer. The promotion ends on August 20. League of Legends AmEx debit cards to be unveiled this week

Credit card company American Express is set to launch a League of Legends-themed debit card that offers in-game Riot Points for spending real money.

According to a report on the New York Times, League of Legends developer Riot Games and American Express will formally unveil the debit cards on Wednesday, along with a sponsorship deal in the game from the American financial company.

The prepaid debit card will feature images of the game's characters, with the New York Times showing an image of a Teemo-branded card. Owners can also accumulate Riot Points, used in League of Legends to buy characters, costumes, and bonuses.

Customers receive 1000 Riot Points for signing up, followed by another 1000 when loading the card with $20 of credit. 10,000 Riot Points are offered for linking the card to a direct deposit account, and the first 10 purchases made with the card will also hand out bonus points.

American Express general manager Stefan Happ said that the scheme was designed to attract a generation of players that are becoming harder to target with traditional advertising. "It gives you a sense of how deeply engaged the players are in playing this game," said Happ. "We are about loyalty, we are about contact and long-lasting engagement. This is an ideal fit from an audience perspective."

The deal will include a 30-second advert from American Express about the prepaid debit card, alongside a series of banner ads to run on the company's Championship Series site.

Alongside the League of Legends debit cards, Blizzard and Visa also have a partnership to provide World of Warcraft themed Visa credit cards.

Crytek websites taken down following 'suspicious activity'

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 05 Agustus 2013 | 23.07

Crysis developer Crytek appears to have become the latest victim of hackers, according to a report by Blue's News.

A statement on Crytek.com said: "We recently became aware of suspicious activity relating to some of Crytek's websites, and acted quickly to take those websites offline for security reasons. We thank you for your patience, and expect to have these sites fully operational soon."

Crytek.com, Mycryengine.com, Crydev.net, and MyCrysis.com all currently display the message, while the developer's other sites, GFACE.com, Crysis.com, and Warface.com are unaffected.

According to the report, users will be prompted to change their passwords once normal service is restored.

Game publishers and developers have become attractive targets for online attackers in recent years, with other high-profile intrusions including those against World of Tanks creator Wargaming.net, Blizzard Entertainment, Ubisoft, and Sony's PlayStation Network.

A spokesperson for EA, Crysis 3's publisher, was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

Naughty Dog confirms The Last of Us was censored for PAL territories

Following suspicion from players that some of the more graphic content found in the critically acclaimed The Last of Us was different in the North American and European versions of the game, a Naughty Dog spokesperson has confirmed that PAL editions were toned down to meet legal requirements in their respective regions.

The comments, made to user Ramify by Naughty Dog developer EvangM said: "1. The gore and violence ratings are subject to local regulatory boards in various countries, so the game must be slightly changed in order to accomodate [sic] those choices.

2. To be honest, I'm not sure what version Australia is getting. If you import the North/South American version, it will not be censored, but EU/UK will be."

Posters on both the PlayStation and Naughty Dog forums expressed concern over differing animations when performing executions, the removal of enemy limb dismemberment, and the amount of blood spray experienced when killing another player during multiplayer matches.

GameSpot contacted Sony Computer Entertainment, seeking clarification as to the specific differences for the game between regions. A spokesperson was unable to comment at time of publication.

Tekken X Street Fighter 'still in development'

Development on crossover fighting game Tekken X Street Fighter has not ceased, Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada said in a recent interview.

Speaking to Siliconera, Katsuhiro Harada stated that the game is "still in development" and that there are "several reasons" why no recent updates on the project have been announced recently.

"One of the reasons is Street Fighter X Tekken was released. That still had updates until recently. One interesting thing we've seen with that title when it came out was that it's not quite what we expected," Harada said.

The producer made reference to Street Fighter X Tekken's reception, saying, "It was not just Tekken fans and Street Fighter fans merging; there seems to be a whole new community growing around that title that wasn't playing either of the titles up until that point. That was very unexpected, but quite cool."

In a bid to support the new community, Harada stated that Namco Bandai is still looking for "the right time" to release Tekken X Street Fighter.

Tekken X Street Fighter was first announced alongside Street Fighter X Tekken in 2010. The two games are separate projects, with Namco Bandai taking up the reins for Tekken X Street Fighter, and Capcom releasing Street Fighter X Tekken last year.

UK Chart: Minecraft stays top as Pikmin 3 falls out of Top 10

The retail release of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has blocked all competition from the top of the UK charts for a second week running.

Pikmin 3, which finished last week in second, dropped sharply out of the top 10 to 15th. The Last of Us climbed to second, followed by Animal Crossing: New Leaf in third.

FIFA 13, now in its forty-fifth week in the charts, finished in fourth place.

Movie tie-in The Smurfs 2 climbed twenty places to finish fifth, a 115 percent increase in week-on-week sales buoyed by the release of the accompanying film.

The rest of the top 10 was filled by all the usual suspects: Far Cry 3 in sixth, LEGO Batman 2 seventh, Call of Duty: Black Ops II in eighth, Tomb Raider ninth, and Assassin's Creed III tenth.

The only new entry in the charts this week was the budget re-release of Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package in 29th. Its successor, Saints Row IV, is due out at the end of August.

Ubisoft says there's an overall ending to Assassin's Creed

Ubisoft has said that it has a planned ending for Assassin's Creed, and that the series follows an overall arc despite its annual release schedule.

Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag director Ashraf IsmaiI said that the series' multiple development teams all follow an overall arc. "We have multiple development teams, then we have the brand team that sits on top and is filled with writers and designers concerned with the series' overall arc," said Ismail.

"So there is an overall arc," he continued, "and each iteration has its place inside this."

Assassin's Creed has attracted its share of criticism for adopting an annual release schedule, but Ismail says that the team has an overall ending in sight, and there are multiple ways for Ubisoft to get there.

"We have an idea of where the end is, what the end is," explained Ismail. "But of course [Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot] announced we are a yearly title, we ship one game a year. So depending on the setting, depending on what fans want, we've given ourselves room to fit more in this arc. But there is an end."

Ismail also says one of the advantages to having multiple studios working on the franchise simultaneously is that the various teams get to work in conjunction to plan plot points and characters ahead of time.

"We're now able to seed stuff earlier and earlier in our games," Ismail said. "So for example in [ACIV] we have Edward, who was seeded in AC3. But there's a lot more stuff in our game that is hinting at other possibilities."

Ubisoft Toronto, which is currently readying the release of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, has already begun work on 2014's Assassin's Creed game. Ubisoft itself has said it does not expect ACIV to outperform its predecessor commercially.

For more information on this year's game, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, check out a recent Ask GameSpot video.

id Software's first Doom 4 project "didn't have the passion and soul"

Bethesda and id Software have spoken about the now-cancelled version of Doom 4, saying that the studio's original attempt at the game didn't feel like a Doom game.

A new version of Doom 4 is now underway at id Software, but in an interview with IGN studio director Tim Willits spoke about why it cancelled its first attempt.

"It wasn't one thing," explained Willits. "It wasn't like the art was bad, or the programming was bad. Every game has a soul. Every game has a spirit. When you played Rage, you got the spirit. And [Doom 4] did not have the spirit, it did not have the soul, it didn't have a personality. It had a bit of schizophrenia, a little bit of an identity crisis. It didn't have the passion and soul of what an id game is."

"Everyone knows the feeling of Doom, but it's very hard to articulate," added Willits.

Doom 4 was originally confirmed in May 2008 via a press release, though the project was scrapped in late 2011. Bethesda confirmed in April 2013 that development on the game had been rebooted, after sources at the time claimed the original version of Doom 4 borrowed many of its creative elements from modern shooters such as Call of Duty.

Bethesda vice president of marketing Pete Hines added that Doom 4 needs to be worth the wait. "If it was like the quintessential, 'yup, that's Doom 4,' then we wouldn't be having this conversation," he said.

"But, it was something that we looked at and the id guys looked at and said, look, it's not even that something is necessarily bad. But is it good enough? You can make a game and say, 'that's not a bad game, but it's not as good as an Elder Scrolls game should be,' and there's a difference…it's not great. It's not amazing. It's not what people have waited all this time for. It needs to be like 'this was totally worth the wait.'"

"I think what the guys at id are working on is…they're pushing the boundaries and challenging themselves. I don't want anybody to look at id's next project and have this reaction that it's still stuck in the '90s," concluded Hines.

While images of Doom 4 have surfaced online, these are believed to have been from the now-scrapped version. "Those images have nothing to do with what you're gonna see in Doom 4," said id Software design director Matthew Hooper.

Call of Duty: Ghosts producer teases "squads" gameplay

Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin tweets 7-second video teasing new gameplay mode for latest entry in shooter series.

Call of Duty: Ghosts may add "squads" gameplay, according to a recent tweet from Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin.

The developer recently tweeted a seven-second video showing off what appears to be a menu for Call of Duty: Ghosts featuring the words "options," "online play" and "squads."

Rubin did not give any additional information about the video clip. Activision will show off the game's multiplayer component for the first time on August 14 at a Los Angeles event.

GameSpot will carry a live-stream of the presentation.

Call of Duty competitor Battlefield has supported squads since 2005's Battlefield 2. The next entry in the Battlefield series--Battlefield 4--launches a week before Call of Duty: Ghosts, on October 29.
