Football Manager 2013 Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 29 Oktober 2012 | 23.07

The first thing you do is pick a team. After that, anything could happen. It's one of the beautiful things about the Football Manager series--every game is different, every player plays differently, and every team provides a different challenge. By focusing on stats and raw data, Sports Interactive has distilled the beautiful game down to a form that has created a 20-year line of addicts. Addicts who want more detail, more leagues, and more chances to turn an underperforming minnow into a blossoming goliath of the game.

It's odd, then, that--in a gesture of what is likely supreme self-awareness--Football Manager 2013's biggest new feature is Classic mode. Designed to streamline the playing experience for veterans and provide an extra helping hand to newcomers, Classic mode is seemingly an admission from the developers that the core game of Football Manager is perhaps becoming too big, too complex, and too time-consuming for anyone with a job, partner, and/or need for sleep (or, at the very least, aspirations to experience such things).

Without exaggeration, it's possible to complete a season of Classic mode in a day or less. This is largely thanks to reduced levels of media interaction, the complete removal of team talks, and the option to auto-resolve matches, taking you straight to the end of each game and displaying the final result in a matter of seconds. This may sound like Football Manager for Dummies, but to think of it in such a way is to do the mode a great disservice. Yes, you can fully simulate matches in seconds and completely remove yourself from player training schedules, but success and failure still ultimately rest on the work you put in over the days leading up to each match, and whether your team actually wants to play for you. Classic mode or not, good and bad managers still exist.

Underpinning Classic mode is the same set of algorithms and painstakingly categorized data that sits at the foundation, meaning the same level of flexibility is afforded to you when it comes to judging, buying, and selling new members of playing and backroom staff. For anyone who has stuck with the series year after year, seeing the same depth of information presented and harnessed in a slightly different way can be initially quite alarming and raises more than the odd question about why this mode is being introduced at all, and whether the game will be streamlined further from here on out.

It's a valid concern, and one that will no doubt split the existing Football Manager community in two--some will appreciate the time saved; others will see it as a threat to the full game they love. Unfortunately, there's no answer at present, but expect to see more resources being sunk into Classic mode in the future if players take to it in a big way. Future concerns aside, though, Classic mode is an excellent addition that makes it easier to get stuck in the world the game creates and a demonstration that, even after 20 years, Sports Interactive still has new ways to introduce us to its offspring.

Accompanying Classic mode in the "new ways to play stakes" is Challenge mode, which features challenges aimed at testing your managerial abilities under various adverse circumstances. The Challenge mode menu suggests that these feats of football wizardry range from easy to hard, but in reality they range from hard to sadistically hard. One challenge asks you to save your team from relegation. Sounds easy enough. Until you load a game up and realize that you start 21 games into the season and 17 points from safety. Another asks you to go through an entire season undefeated, while yet another demands that you meet the chairman's start-of-season expectations with a team so riddled with injuries that you wish you could suit up yourself in a bid to provide options at center back.

Like Classic mode, the challenges offer a new way to play and make it possible to live an entire story in a single sitting. Despite their uncompromising difficulty, the fact that you're presented with such a clear and direct goal makes the experience extremely rewarding when you get it right. It promotes a different way of approaching the game, knowing that you don't necessarily need to worry about next season and beyond--all you need to worry yourself with is what the best strategy is for the next game and this season. In an odd way, the constraints of the challenges are liberating in their narrow focus.

Assassin's Creed III supports microtransactions

Last month, Electronic Arts executive Peter Moore said microtransactions would someday be in every game. For Ubisoft, that time is now. According to product listings for the Xbox Live marketplace and PlayStation Store, Assassin's Creed III will allow gamers to purchase a range of in-game "Erudito Credits," ranging from $1 to $20.

It is not clear what the Erudito Credits will allow gamers to purchase, though a screengrab from WorthPlaying indicates the content will act as boosters of sorts, allowing players to "acquire some game items, disregarding your current level."

In addition to the Erudito Credits, Assassin's Creed III will feature a host of downloadable add-ons, beginning with a four-chapter Benedict Arnold campaign that will be made available exclusively to PlayStation 3 players.

Additionally, a $30 Assassin's Creed III season pass for all platforms includes a tyrannical George Washington single-player mission, as well as new maps and characters for the game's multiplayer component.

Assassin's Creed III is due out for Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 30. A Wii U release is slated for November 18 day-and-date with the system and a PC launch will round out the bunch on November 20. For more on Assassin's Creed III, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Cliff Bleszinski offers to help 'fix' Resident Evil

Former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski has offered to help Capcom "fix" the Resident Evil franchise.

"Hey, Capcom. Call me," he said over Twitter. "We can fix Resident Evil. Together."

Bleszinski did not go into any further detail regarding why he believes the Resident Evil franchise would need fixing. However, it is likely he is referring to the franchise's latest effort, Resident Evil 6, which shipped this month behind very mixed reviews.

Bleszinski left Epic Games after 20 years with the company earlier this month. At the time, he said it was "time for a much needed break" before embarking on the "next stage" of his career.

It is not clear where Bleszinski is headed, though his Twitter feed of late has led to much speculation. Since leaving Epic Games, Bleszinski has visited the offices of Activision, Zynga, Double Fine, and Electronic Arts. He has also met with God of War and Twisted Metal designer David Jaffe.

FIFA 13 holds off Dishonored on UK chart, Fable: The Journey lands at 37

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 15 Oktober 2012 | 23.07

There's no stopping FIFA 13 on the UK all-formats games charts, which held onto the number one position for a third week running. The game dropped 63 per cent in sales compared to last week, but that was enough to hold off four other new entries in the top 10. Dishonored landed at number two, Pokemon Black Version 2 went in at three, Pokemon White Version 2 managed five, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown came in at seven.

Despite FIFA 13's dominance, publisher Bethesda managed to score the UK's biggest new intellectual property launch of the year so far with Dishonored, which outsold the previous title-holder Sleeping Dogs in its first week. Nintendo's two new Pokemon games also performed well, although Chart-Track notes that even if the sales of both games were combined, Dishonored would have still been at number two.

Last week's number two, Resident Evil 6, fell 78 per cent in sales on its second week, meaning it's now at number four. Conversely, Just Dance 4 actually managed to increase sales by 36 per cent on its second week, but the amount of competition means it also drops two places from number four to number six.

Further down the chart, WRC 3: FIA World Rally Championship arrived at number 27, while Microsoft's Kinect-only title Fable: The Journey just made it into the top 40 at number 37.

Recovering lost memory in Ys: Foliage Ocean in Celceta

We spent five hours on Falcom's definitive reiteration of Ys IV.

The past few weeks have been a joyous one for connoisseurs of the action RPG genre thanks to Torchlight 2 and Borderlands 2. Gamers who don't mind one more name on their action RPG list would do well to consider Ys: Foliage Ocean in Celceta for the PS Vita, a re-imagining of the fourth Ys game.

A brief history lesson: in 1993, Ys creators Falcom left development of the fourth game to Hudson Soft and Tonkin House for reasons unknown. This resulted in two different iterations of Ys IV--one for the PC Engine (Turbografx-16) and one for the SNES in Japan. As this would naturally confuse a lot of people, Falcom has opted to create their own canon version of Ys IV--20 years later. While we don't know why it took them this long to rectify the oversight, it's better late than never.

Players control main character Adol as he explores the huge forest continent of Celceta to try to recover his lost memory. Accompanying him are thief Dulen, tribe warrior Carna, and a host of other Celceta denizens, each with their own skills and story. Players control a party of three characters: you control one person from the group, while the AI handles the duties for the other two.

Switching between party members is a must, as certain enemies can only be damaged by the type of weapons they carry. Fleshy and soft-skin enemies can only be damaged by slash attacks, which Adol has, while heavily-armoured foes can only be hurt by bludgeoning attacks, which Dulen inflicts from his fists of fury.

Switching party members also help in non-combat portions of the game. Dulen can unlock special chests, which contain sweet loot or quest items, through unconventional means, while Carna can use her glaive to cut down hard-to-reach tethers, like spider webs and thick branches.

As with most action-oriented RPGs, the controls appear easy to master. The circle button is to attack enemies, while holding the R button and pushing another face button activates an SP attack. This move requires SP energy (the blue frilly meter on the bottom right), which fills up by attacking and killing foes. Every character has a ton of special moves catered to their fighting style, which and can be upgraded further, provided you use them frequently.

Adol has a dash-slash attack and a quick uppercut slash that knocks lighter foes into the air, while Carna has ailment-afflicting knives (poison, paralyse, the works) and a charge shot that hits multiple foes, at the cost of more meter and a slight delay in the attack. For more oomph against enemies with bigger health bars, you can pull off an ultimate attack by pressing the L button when your ultimate attack meter (the yellow circle, next to the special attack meter) is full.

To avoid attacks, players just need to press the X button to dodge, and the triangle button to do a quick block. The kicker is that dodging at the last possible frame of the attack will trigger flash roll, where time slows down for a few seconds so that players can amass a quick counterattack to punish enemies. Blocking at the last second will not only nullify damage, but also gets you back a good chunk of SP energy to pull off more moves.

Depending on the scenario, these moves help add a lot of strategy in playing style. For example, we went all out with Adol and Dulin, while also playing the range with Carna when fighting things like poison-spitting bugs, stone-chucking gorillas, and leap-frogging mermen.

Microsoft launches Xbox Music

Microsoft has unveiled Xbox Music, a streaming, download, and cloud music service with access to around 30 million tracks. Streaming is free thanks to advertising support, while an ad-free version called Xbox Music Pass--which includes unlimited plays, and offline support for PCs and mobile--costs $9.99 (£8.99) per month. The a-la-carte download option offers 256kbps DRM-free MP3s tracks (versus 192kbps WMA for streaming) for purchase from the Xbox Music Store.

Cloud storage is also promised for later in the year. Similar to Apple's iTunes Match service, Xbox Music will allow you to scan-and-match any music you own and add it to your own personal cloud catalogue for use on all your devices. It includes music acquired through other services, such as iTunes or Amazon.

Xbox Music--which was originally rumored to launch on October 26--is available on Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, and Xbox 360. Notably, Windows Phone 7 and Windows 7 users will not be able to access the service. However, The Verge notes that Zune Music will continue to be supported on those platforms. Microsoft is promising that Xbox Music will made available on other platforms "in the coming year".
